Helping Adolescents Living on the Streets of Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, the Lorna Byrne Foundation has begun an initiative to support over 120 children and teenagers at risk for homelessness and lack of education. We work alongside local authorities to help these children get back into school and receive the educational training they need to prosper and grow.

The following support systems have been created through our work:

  1. Children are helped in re-entering primary and secondary schooling, and older teenagers are supported in identifying their unique interests and developing skills for technical vocations.
  2. Students can meet with professional social workers to boost their mental and emotional health. They can also join drama classes and sports activities for creative and physical outlets.
  3. So far, 20 children have attended counseling sessions with social workers. They expressed wanting to reconnect with their families and have since been reunited.
  4. We partner with Ethiopian government institutions to train local police. This helps them understand the vulnerabilities of these children, especially those still on the street.
